Plant Care Guide - Banana Plant (Musa)

The banana plant, also known as Musa, is a popular houseplant with large, green leaves that instantly bring a tropical atmosphere into your home. This plant grows relatively quickly and can become quite large with proper care. Despite its exotic appearance, the banana plant is quite easy to care for, as long as it gets enough light, water, and warmth.

Care

Watering

This plant needs a fair amount of water. Keep the soil slightly moist, especially in spring and summer when it's actively growing. Typically, water 1 to 2 times a week, but always check the top layer of the soil first. Let it dry out slightly before watering again. Be careful not to let water sit in the bottom of the pot, as this can cause root rot.

Light requirement

The banana plant loves lots of light and grows best in a spot with bright, indirect sunlight. Preferably, place it near a south or west-facing window. A little direct sunlight in the morning or evening won't hurt, but avoid harsh midday sun to prevent the leaves from scorching. With too little light, the plant will grow slower and develop weaker leaves.

Humidity & Temperature

The banana plant is a tropical plant and loves high humidity. Spray the leaves regularly or use a humidifier, especially in winter when the air is drier. The ideal temperature is between 18 and 28°C. Avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 12°C, as the plant cannot tolerate these well.

Nutrition

During the growing season (spring and summer), the banana plant needs extra nutrients. Apply liquid plant food approximately once every 2 weeks to support growth. In autumn and winter, the plant grows slower and usually does not need fertilizing.

Soil & repotting

Use a light, well-draining potting soil that retains water but does not stay too wet. Repot the plant only when necessary, for example, if you see the roots growing out of the pot or the plant is growing less well. Then choose a slightly larger pot with drainage holes so that excess water can drain away properly.
