Chlorophytum

The Chlorophytum comosum, better known as the spider plant, is one of the easiest and most popular houseplants. With its long, graceful leaves and playful offshoots (plantlets), it adds a fresh and vibrant look to any interior. This plant is ideal for beginners and thrives in almost any room in the house.

Care

Watering

The water requirement is average. Allow the top layer of the soil to dry out slightly before watering again. Usually, once a week is sufficient. The spider plant can tolerate being slightly underwatered better than overwatered, so avoid letting the roots remain constantly wet.

Light requirement

The spider plant grows best in a spot with plenty of indirect light, but can also adapt well to partial shade. Avoid bright direct sunlight, as this can discolour or dry out the leaves. In a brighter environment, the plant will grow faster and produce more runners.

Humidity & Temperature

This plant is not demanding and thrives in average humidity. Extra misting is not necessary but can help keep the leaves fresh. The ideal temperature is between 15 and 25°C. It can also tolerate somewhat cooler temperatures.

Nutrition

In spring and summer, feed your plants once a month to support growth. In autumn and winter, feeding is usually not necessary.

Soil & repotting

Use an airy, well-draining potting soil. Repot the plant only when it has clearly outgrown its pot or when the roots have little room. The spider plant grows relatively quickly, but does not need frequent repotting.
