Plant Care Guide - Maranta (Prayer Plant)

The Maranta, also known as the prayer plant, is a special houseplant with striking leaf patterns. The leaves often have beautiful designs and colors and move throughout the day. In the evening, they fold upwards, which gives this plant its nickname.

This plant originates from the tropical rainforests of South America and thrives in a warm and humid environment.

Care

Watering

The water requirement is moderate to high. Keep the soil slightly moist, but not wet. Do not let the soil dry out completely, as this plant is sensitive to that.

Light requirement

The Maranta loves plenty of indirect light, but also thrives in partial shade. Avoid direct sunlight, as this can damage the leaves and fade their colors.

Humidity & Temperature

The Maranta loves high humidity and a temperature between 18 and 26°C. In dry air, the leaves may curl or get brown edges.

Nutrition

During the growing season (spring and summer), the banana plant needs extra nutrients. Apply liquid plant food approximately once every 2 weeks to support growth. In autumn and winter, the plant grows slower and usually does not need fertilizing.

Soil & repotting

Use a light, well-draining potting soil that retains water but does not stay too wet. Repot the plant only when necessary, for example, if you see the roots growing out of the pot or the plant is growing less well. Then choose a slightly larger pot with drainage holes so that excess water can drain away properly.
